Development of serious game for learning mathematics..

The research group ADIR (spanish acronym fo School Learning, Difficulties and Academic Performance) belonging to the University of Oviedo, had among its research projects the DIR (Dynamic Integrated Representation), a program whose aim is to work basic mathematical skills for solving problems in Early Childhood Education and first cycle of Primary Education.

Once the value of the method was tested in analogical sessions, the research group SLDAP hired us to develop the digitalization of this methodology.

Project Goal

Develop a serious game to work on basic problem-solving skills in infant and primary school

The challenge of the project was the development, design and execution of a software that would serve as a tool for the implementation of the RDI Mate project.

The software should have as its main objective to work on mathematical competencies through a structure organized in three phases or forms of presentation of information: iconic presentation, combined presentation and symbolic presentation.

Among the main actions to be carried out by Cuicui Studios were the following:

  • Creation of user interface.

  • Iconography design for the different tool levels.
  • Pedagogical adaptation to digital format.
  • Game programming and levels design.
  • Programming of data collection system.
  • Implementation of data storage in Google Drive for later processing.

The developed app had to be multiplatform and work correctly for iOS, Android and Windows operating systems.

Milestones achieved

More than 3,000 children learn basic problem-solving skills through the serious game RDI

Since the beginning of 2018, the DIR tool has been used in more than 50 schools and more than 3,000 children between the ages of 4 and 9 have been studied.

Currently, more than 25,000 play sessions have been carried out and the software has had great results. It has been proven that training using the tool improves the mathematical skills and concepts of those children participating in the research. This circumstance has led to the production of several scientific publications and the presence in prestigious congresses.
